Since the beginning of this institution in 1908 the name has been changed six times to more clearly represent the alterations in the institution's mission. At its founding the name was "State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Fredericksburg." In 1914 it was changed to "State Normal School for Women at Fredericksburg." In 1924 it became "State Teachers College at Fredericksburg, and in 1938 to "Mary Washington College." In 1944 the change became "Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, and then back to "Mary Washington College" in 1972. Today the name "University of Mary Washington" was given to the institution in 2004.</text>
