The mace has a slender dark-red leather-covered shaft. The top of the mace bears the seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia. On top of the enlarged body of the mace is engraved: "Presented on Behalf of the Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia, February 7, 1970." The four faces of the body have engraved the seal of Mary Washington College on one side, the seal of the University of Virginia on the reverse side, and between the sides, representations of the dogwood bloom, the state flower of Virginia. The mace was first used at graduation exercises in June 1970. It is displayed in the foyer of the Simpson Library.
