James Farmer was appointed as Commonwealth Professor of History at Mary Washington College in 1985. His rich, resonant voice and gift of storytelling enthralled students and faculty. With self-depreciating humor, illustrative anecdotes, and sometimes songs, Professor Farmer conveyed the drama and injustices during the civil rights movement. He also contributed extensively to the college's efforts to strengthen race relations and diversity. James Farmer was awarded an honorary doctorate of letters in 1997 and the college's multicultural center was named after him in 1998.
